2024 ~ Fifth Ward Senior Backyard Garden Project
Beginning January - June 2024, C.O.L.I.A. and its team will journey throughout the Fifth Ward community, serving 12 senior families by addressing food insecurity and installing backyard raised gardens.
We are confident that C.O.L.I.A.'s VALUES will continue to blossom into tangible actions and positive impacts, and as our project journey comes to an end in this community, other organizations and academic institutions with an invested interest in Fifth Ward will continue supporting our seniors.

Jasmine is a proud representative of the talented and passionate Gen Z cohort, stands as a beacon of dedication to both her faith and community. She finds joy in the simple pleasures of life, such as listening to music and harboring dreams of traversing the globe.
With a keen understanding of equity, she recognizes the importance of fair treatment for all community members. This understanding serves as the foundation for her commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of those around her.
Texas Southern University is a beacon in the community and provides leadership and support to major community efforts to maintain and improve this historically rich District. As such, The Alabama Garden, a 56-bed vegetable garden at 2818 Alabama, still exists today. The Alabama Garden is affiliated with the Houston chapter of Urban Harvest, the national organization that encourages community gardening as a means of feeding the poor. Texas Southern University owns the land on which the garden is located.

Beyond cultivating gardens, it cultivates a sense of pride, ownership, and unity among community members, exemplifying transformative power. Through sustainable practices and a dedication to social impact, this center not only nurtures the soil but also sows the seeds of empowerment, equity, and pride within the hearts of those it serves.

Faith Revitalization Center (FRC), a cherished staple in the community, stands as a beacon of inspiration, rooted in the principles of "Love, Hope & Healing." With a profound commitment to nurturing the spiritual and emotional well-being of individuals and families, FRC has become a cornerstone of support. Embracing a holistic approach to community service, FRC not only cultivates a space for spiritual growth but also actively engages and invites community and other organizations to join hands in fostering a united front of compassion and service. In the spirit of collaboration, FRC seeks to extend its reach and impact.

Senior Services determine the need for social and nutrition services with special attention given to those elderly in greatest economic or social need. The nutrition programs are designed to eliminate food insecurity for older, vulnerable adults. Through a network of community-based agencies and government entities, the Third Ward Multi-Service Center not only focuses on senior health & wellness but also manages the distribution of close to 1.5 million meals annually, to adults 60 years or older, throughout Houston and Harris County.

Westry Mouton Project (WMP) has committed to serving children and families without boundaries. Dedicated to engaging youth in impactful environmental and social justice work, WMP is focused on cultivating a generation of environmentally conscious and socially responsible leaders, harnessing the power of sustainable agriculture to instill a sense of responsibility towards our planet. By providing youth with opportunities to actively participate in the cultivation of community gardens and advocating for environmental and social justice, WMP is sowing the seeds for a more resilient and equitable future. As stewards of both the land and community, WMP invites youths to join hands in nurturing a generation that not only understands the importance of sustainable practices but actively works towards creating positive change.

River Network believes that "Equitable and enduring solutions start with community – created with, by, and for the people most impacted."
River Network Flow Funding Circle not only created a space, but continues to support its Flow Funders, engaging each of them as leaders, thought partners, and creators of this new Trust-Based Philanthropy concept.
This project helps to further address the impacts of climate change and promote social and water equity.

Food desserts in the Houston areas are often found in minority and lower-income communities with limited access to affordable and nutritious food. Fifth Ward, among many other communities in the Houston area face the hardships of having limited access to nutritious food.
Local access to fresh produce and healthy food options is essential to healthy living for everyone and C.O.L.I.A. aims to assist and play its role by addressing the need for sustainable agriculture food security.
